It's no secret that I grew up in Durango, Colorado, just 75 miles south of Ouray.  As a result, I acquired a love for trains, especially old steam locomotives.  So, it figures that I took more pictures of the train (which happened to be in town when we drove to Silverton) than I did of the scenery.  Despite that, I did mention to Lannette that Silverton was more beautiful than I ever remembered it being, with early snowfall glinting above timberline, a nearly cloudless sky, and the colors on the leaves just starting to turn.

Try to imagine that as you look at these cool train pictures.

D&SNG #482, a K-36 2-8-2 Mikado built by Baldwin Locomotive Works in 1925, prepares to change direction for passenger pickup in Silverton.

Silverton scenery is breathtaking.  This is Kendall Mountain, immediately east of town.  Kendall is "only" 13,066 feet high, but still looks impressive from Silverton's 9,318 elevation.

After loading passengers, D&SNG #482 departs Silverton for Durango, with the 124 year old Alamosa Parlor Car attached.

On the way back to the Black Canyon National Park, we saw this old Galloping Goose outside the Ridgway Railroad Museum.

And for those of you who like animated GIFs, here's D&SNG #482 leaving Silverton.  For those who don't like animated GIFs, it's at the bottom of the page.
