Trip Pictures Ouray, Colorado is home to the Box Cañon Falls, the Riverside Slide, and, last time I checked, CW McCall. It was named for Chief Ouray, leader of the Uncompahgre Utes, who worked until his death for compromise between the silver-hungry white man and the Ute tribes. These days, the chief feature of Ouray, Colorado is its scenery, as you can see from the following shots. We'll start with a few shots of Box Cañon Falls. To get to the falls, one must follow a railed catwalk back into a narrow passageway in the rock. As you get closer to the falls, the roar echoes off the walls, making it tough to hear. Mining
equipment left over from the sixties Approaching
the falls. Note the covered catwalk at upper left. The
high catwalk crossing the fissure -- an optional walk.
Looking
down at the rushing water Water
cascades through the narrow joints on the right. During spring
runoff, water would also be pouring from the hole beyond the old
observation deck, at left.
The
lower exit of the falls. Even at this low level of activity, the
sound was very loud.
Looking
out the mouth of Box Cañon. A
house built high on the canyon wall, visible from a short nature
trail. In Ouray, a relatively small house like this can go for
half a million dollars. This
is why the housing market in Ouray is so high. The view is worth
it.
