Gunnison
Trip Pictures Black Canyon of the Gunnison National Park contains some of Colorado's most rugged scenery. Lannette and I camped there over Labor Day Weekend. We drove to the park Saturday and set up camp in the late afternoon, then cooked and ate yummy burgers that Lannette had prepared for the trip. A sudden storm kicked up after we ate dinner, and sent us running for the tent. Wind, hail, and rain pelted the tent, and thunder and lightning crashed close by. At 8,300 feet, on top of a mesa with nothing taller than Gambel Oak all around, that can be a little unnerving! When we woke Sunday morning, we found 1/4 inch of ice on our tablecloth and thick, beautiful frost patterns on the car's windshield and bumpers. A neighboring camper's thermometer registered 34°, but it had certainly been colder than that before the sun came up. When

itself was breathtaking, and I'll let the following images speak for
themselves, with minor annotation. View

and south rims of the canyon. The south rim (right) has more
exposure to the sun, and therefore more erosion.
